Dom. War 4 Mini Challenge 1 - War General Portrait WIP 6

Hoookay i'm pretty happy with it now. Black & red, my favourite colours. Named him General Demaenetus, after an ancient greek general.

Sourced from Wikipedia :

Demaenatus was an Athenian commander during the Corinthian War. In 389 BC he was one of the commanders in an engagement close to Aegina that resulted in a Spartan defeat and the death of the Spartan commander Gorgopas. One Athenian unit under Chabrias prepared an ambush while another under Demaenetus drew Gorgopas out of Aegina and into the trap by openly marching through the area.

Demeanatus also participated in naval operations around Abydus in the following year. He along with fellow commanders Dionysius, Leontichus and Phanias unscuccessfully pursued the Spartan fleet under Antalcidas. However, Antalcidas was able to evade them and link up with an allied Syracusan and Italian squadron at Abydus.

GUYS I NEED FEEDBACK! Red? Or Blue? Or any other colour you think might make him look menacing? And the glow? Do you think orange is good?

DW 4 Mini Challenge 1 - WIP 4

Okay guys, i'm ditching the previous general design and going for this one. Somewhat Appleseed inspired, i prefer hard surface sculpting and my favourite dark colours. Will be using the extra 500 tris for some cylinders, but will have more left. Feel free to suggest any additional decorations on him! Deadline's this coming Monday btw.

DW IV Mini Challenge 1 - War General Portrait WIP 3

Man... getting problems with software everyday. Today's problem is getting the render passes to work in Maya 2009. I like it a lot, they really made the workflow much better, and hardware rendering is much smoother now. Anyways, this is what i have on the general so far.

DW IV Mini Challenge 1 - War General Portrait WIP 2

Alright, sculpting is beginning to be quite fun. Added a beret, some spikes, and a shoulder guard as well. Wanna start texturing real bad, wanna give him some colours!

Had to reinstall Maya 2008 to use Turtle's surface transfer tools for the normal map and it came out nicely, something went wrong in ZBrush and the hi-res model went awry when i tried to use the morph target to fix some UV issues.

Oh lol mindf**ked i can't write properly anymoar. Nid sleip.

DW IV Mini Challenge 1 - War General Portrait WIP 1

Thought i should just give it a go, since it only lasts for 9 days. Here's what i have so far. Basically we are given 3 base models to choose from, and create normal maps etc. without altering the original. Thinking of creating a medieval+sci-fi general that has absolutely no way of showing emotion besides using badges... with smileys n stuff.

The Pawn (3D) - Final

Okay folks, it's DONE. Stopping a project can be quite difficult as you keep wanting to add stuff to it, add stuff to it, and add MORE STUFF TO IT so i'll just call this one... complete. May post more poses as well as the maps and stuff later for those who want to see them.

Here you go, hope you guys like it.

Poly count : 17984 triangles (including weapons, excluding platform)
Tools : Maya 2008, ZBrush 3, Mental Ray, Unfold3D, Photoshop CS3

The Pawn (3D) - WIP 8

Textured and rendered. Here's a shot of the Pawn without weapons. Decided to give him 2 cleavers instead of one and turn him into a pure melee unit.

The Pawn (3D) - WIP 7

Ah... February 14th. The day 7Eleven and pharmacies get a noticable increase in sales. I'll contribute to the economy too, I'll get some chips later.

V-day aside, I'm pretty much done with the detailing. Realized that I must be subtle and not go overboard with damages n dents, or it'll look like a really bad accident. Here's some renders from ZBrush, just for the heck of it.

Have a nice evening, everyone.

The Pawn (3D) - WIP 6

Finally started Zbrushing, putting in basic details according to the concept art. All detailing was done on subdivision lvl. 6. There was no need for progressive dividing, which is more appropriate for organic subjects. Will use a lot of alphas for the next detailing phase: SCRATCHES, DENTS & DAMAGE.

Rendered using the Gorilla material.

The Pawn (3D) - WIP 5

UVs and holding edges are done, had some complications with instanced duplicates which messed up the UVs but was fixed by importing meshes from previous files and using the 'Copy Mesh Attributes' tool with the option set to 'UV Sets'.

To Ivan : Thanks, it iz tiem to ZBrush nao. I will remember not to launch a 2nd instance of ZBrush. *Turns off ObjectDock

The Pawn (3D) - WIP 4

Ahhh.... modelling is finally done. Now comes the worst part : UV-ing. Probably the most tedious process of all, where wrong/bad cuts and stretching would kill any mapping that might come later (normals/displacement/colour bla bla). After that i'll be adding holding edges for proper smoothing/subdividing in ZBrush.

*WARNING : (Fairly) LARGE IMAGE*

The Pawn (3D) - WIP 3

Rushed the feet and arms today, and the poly count has risen to 32644 tris. Realised that there are poly-expensive parts that could be trimmed down, but will do that later. Now it's time to finish the abdomen area and knee joints.
